Raising Cane's: A Welcome Addition to Pittsburgh Fast Food
Raising Cane's is a fast-food chain that recently moved into Pittsburgh. They have opened one in Oakland and North Versailles with a third coming to South Fayette. I visited the location in Oakland which is right on Fifth Avenue near Popeyes. Raising Cane's is known for their quality food and tidy restaurant interiors and this location did not disappoint.
Raising Cane's has a simple menu consisting of fried chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, coleslaw, Texas toast, and Cane's sauce. The difference in menu items is just the number of chicken fingers you want with your sides. Even the chicken sandwich they offer is just chicken fingers with lettuce and Cane's sauce. I got the box combo for dinner on my first visit to Raising Cane's in Oakland. It consists of 4 chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, coleslaw, Texas toast, and Cane's sauce. However, I decided to swap out the coleslaw for a second piece of Texas toast because I think it's better. The chicken tenders were crispy and juicy even after bringing them home first to eat. I thought the fries were good but still, my favorite part is the Texas toast. If you like slightly spicy sauces then Cane's sauce is right up your alley. It consists of mayo, ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic powder, hot sauce, and black pepper. I always get a second cup of the sauce because it is really good.
The service I had at Raising Cane's was pretty standard. I ordered my food on their app and it was waiting for me on the pickup shelves when I arrived. Since the menu is simple they can have the food made very quickly and streamline efficiency. I am not usually a fan of pickup shelves as anyone can come in and take the food. However, if you turn on geolocation on your app they claim to make the food so it will be done just when you arrive.
The inside of this Cane's is a little smaller than most of its restaurants. You can eat at some tables to the right or sit on stools at a height table. I thought it was well-decorated with Pitt theming matching the area and the cool Cane's branding up as well. The restaurant was surprisingly clean even after being open for a little now.
If you are looking for a great fast casual restaurant in the heart of Oakland I would recommend trying Raising Cane's. Since this is a new chain to Pittsburgh it will be busy for quite some time but it is worth it even if they are busy. Their chicken is simple with no heavy seasoning which does turn some people away. However, if you enjoy simple fried chicken tenders, you will enjoy their food.
