PGH Lent

Pittsburgh Lent Guide

E Town Bar & Grille Etna, PA

Lent is a big deal for the hardworking Yinzers of Pittsburgh. The city and the surrounding counties are home to a large number of Catholics. This means there are many people who do not eat meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent. Thankfully, Pittsburgh offers many places to find fish during this time.

Traditionally, people go to church and firehall fish frys, which have become a staple in the area. It is a nice time for the communities in Pittsburgh to come together and enjoy a nice fish dinner with their neighbors.

I have found that restaurants in Pittsburgh also like to take part in this during the Lent season. Many places will have dedicated Lent menus or highlight their fish sandwiches for people to try. Also, if you do not want to contend with the large crowds or lines at fish frys, going to a restaurant might be a good idea. Below are some of my favorite places to get fish in Pittsburgh during Lent!

E Town is a staple restaurant when it comes time to find a good fish sandwich during Lent. It is situated right on Butler St in Etna. The fish portions are huge! You get two fish filets deep-fried and served on a bun. It comes with fries, coleslaw, tartar, and cocktail sauce. I always liked how you can actually taste the fish in E Town's fish sandwich, and the breading is light and crispy. The coleslaw is the creamy mayo style with lots of rich flavor.

Industry Public House has two locations in Lawrenceville and North Fayette. Both serve fish and chips. You normally get one large piece of beer-battered fish with a side of fries, slaw, cocktail sauce, and tartar remoulade. I enjoy the thicker beer-battered crust, which is crunchy and full of flavor. Inside, the fish is meaty and flaky. Industry has a different coleslaw, with it not having any mayo or many toppings. Instead, it has shredded cabbage, carrots, and cilantro. I also really enjoy the fries with skin on them and tartar remoulade to dip. If you do not like heavy breading, this fish can get a little greasy.

Stinky's Bar & Grill

Stinky's Bar & Grill is one of my favorite bars to go to in Pittsburgh. Located on Hatfield St in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, they serve up some of the best bar food around. They also happen to have, in my opinion, the best fish sandwich in town. The "codfather," as they call it, includes a freshly beer-battered and fried piece of cod on a kaiser roll. It comes with French fries, homemade coleslaw, and cocktail sauce. The fish is breaded nicely and not too greasy, while the cod is flavorful and tender. All three of these fish dishes are really good. Definitely give one of them a try the next time you are looking for fish during Lent, or any other time during the year. Each of these dishes is served year-round!
